Newport house

This single-family house is located on a previously blasted rock outcropping in Newport, RI. Restricted by view easements, ledge, wetlands, municipal and state approvals we approached this project not by it’s constraints but by the opportunity to weave a new house into a healed landscape.

The house’s traditional forms, with rooms arranged enfilade, shift in and out to provide a variety of diagonal and frontal views, enabling light-filled rooms from at least two sides. The pool extends to the south, with stone walls and terraces supporting the domesticated landscape. The building painted and stained a neutral color sits quietly acknowledging the importance of the Ocean Drive Historic District.

Given the rare opportunity to complete the interiors, we selected a neutral palate of quiet colors and textured fabrics, rugs which continued the clients interest in working with local artists.
